New Antwerp Cruiseterminal

New Antwerp Cruiseterminal

On the river Scheldt near the city of Antwerp a new cruise terminal will be constructed. This terminal is capable of handling river cruises and sea cruises. Our project scope includes the design of a floating mooring construction and the stabilisation of the historic quay wall.

The mooring construction consists of three large mooring pontoons with a length of 120 meters each and two intermediate pontoons that carry each a 70 meter long entrance bridge to the quay wall. The mooring construction is designed for handling cruise ships up to 38.000 tonnes. Innovative solutions are adapted in order to realise a design that is capable to withstand these high mooring loads and a tidal water level range of more than five meters.

The stabilisation of the historic quay wall is designed as a combination of the following measures:

  • ground tightening of joints between different foundation caissons below the low water line;
  • installation of a counterfort berm at the toe of the quay wall;
  • consolidation grouting of weathered concrete in foundation caissons;
  • installation of grout anchors and construction of a concrete capping beam.

The presence of historic buildings in the close vicinity of the quay wall requires a specialised work method to execute these works successfully. Special construction techniques are adapted and an extensive monitoring program during execution of the works will be set up to monitor the state of the historic buildings.

On the river bed a rip rap protection and asphalt mattresses are installed in order to protect the river bottom of erosion due to ship manoeuvres.
